This work is the first book-length account of the life and teaching of the Bulgarian-born spiritual adept Omraam Mikhal Avanhov (1900-1986), who was a disciple of the saintly Peter Deunov (Beinsa Deuno), modern Bulgaria's greatest spiritual figure. In 1937, at the behest of his teacher, Avanhov went to France where he lived and taught for nearly half a century. When on a pilgrimage in India, Avanhov was hailed by a famous Hindu yogi as the reincarnation of a solar sage from Vedic times. Indeed, the sun-in its hidden spiritual aspect-plays a significant role in Avanhov's teaching, which he has described as a form of Solar Yoga. "There is no more worthy, more glorious or more potent work," explained Avanhov, "than this work with light." Drawing on his own extensive knowledge of the spiritual traditions, Georg Feuerstein has succeeded in capturing the unique spirit of Avanhov's teaching and in giving Western seekers a sensitive portrayal of one of the great light-bringers of our age. "In Georg Feuerstein's wonderful presentation of a contemporary master, I was deeply moved by Avanhov's Bodhisattvic simplicity, veracity, and good humor and Feuerstein's self-effacing clarifications where needed that make this book a treasure trove for anyone open to the great wisdom tradition."Frederick Franck, M.D., author of The Zen of Seeing, My Days With Albert Schweitzer, etc. |
